Variety of Mexican Papaya

A fruit that introduced the name of Mexican papaya to the world, with an intense aroma. Sometimes, the pulp may have little sweetness but a great taste towards the center.

People used to enjoy it with salt and lime in large chunks due to its unique flavor. This variety was known to be an affordable fruit due to the large weight of its fruits.

The last batch of fruits from this papaya was seen in 2017, and to date, it has not been reported again. Neither in crops nor in orchards or homes, it is feared to be currently extinct.

It should not be confused with the "Mamey" papaya from northern Veracruz or with new strains of Maradol that produce larger fruits. This papaya produced hexagonal-shaped fruits.

This exceptional papaya could reach up to 18 kg in weight per piece and had yellow fruits that experienced a great boom in exports in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, before being displaced by the current Maradol papaya.

This incredible variety of papaya had a shorter shelf life but stood out for its great taste and high production. It formed much larger trees with trunks that sometimes branched. Its roots were protruding, and it had large palmate leaves. It was highly productive in the central dry region of the state of Veracruz in Mexico.
